Overview
Server platforms span rack and blade hardware, hyperconverged appliances, virtual machines and cloud instances. Sizing considers CPU generation and core count, memory, storage performance, network throughput and redundancy of power and networking.
Operationally, servers need lifecycle discipline more than they need horsepower: firmware and OS patching, monitoring, configuration baselines, documented ownership and a defined refresh or decommission date.
Security considerations
- Harden to a published baseline, remove unused roles and restrict administrative access to jump hosts.
- Manage out of band controllers (iDRAC, iLO, BMC) on an isolated network with unique credentials.
