What is Information Technology?
The systems, platforms and practices used to store, process, transmit, secure and manage information in support of an organisation's work.

Overview
Information technology is the discipline of running the systems that handle information: the devices people use, the identities that authenticate them, the networks that connect them, the applications and data they depend on, and the infrastructure and cloud services underneath.
It is not a collection of unrelated products. Every environment, from a ten person office to a global enterprise, is the same stack expressed at different scale, which is why the layered model used throughout IT Atlas transfers between organisations.
How it works
- 01Security spans every layer rather than sitting beside them: identity security, endpoint security, application and data security, network security and cloud security are all facets of the same programme.
- 02Operations sustains every layer: monitoring, service management, patching, backup verification and documentation.
- 03Governance directs the whole environment through policy, standards, risk decisions and ownership.
Why it matters
- Organisations now depend on these systems continuously; an hour of identity or network downtime stops most work entirely.
- Understanding dependencies turns firefighting into engineering, because you can predict what a change will affect.
- It makes the difference between buying products and building an architecture.
